About

I am a historian, amateur pianist, and professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where I teach in the Department of East Asian Languages & Cultural Studies and am affiliated with the History Department, Feminist Studies Department, and the Global Gender & Sexuality Cluster of the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies. Holder of the Lai Ho & Wu Cho-liu Endowed Chair in Taiwan Cultural Studies, I also direct the Center for Taiwan Studies. I received my Ph.D. in the History of Science Program at Princeton University.

My work is concerned with the history of systems of thought, spanning from the social life of sexual concepts to the transcultural foundations of psychoanalysis and racial science. You can listen to a podcast on my current book project here. As the Founding Chair (2019–2022) of the Society of Sinophone Studies, I utilize new paradigms of global inquiry to rethink the conventions of historiography.

I am the author and editor of more than a dozen books. After Eunuchs: Science, Medicine, and the Transformation of Sex in Modern China (2018) received the International Convention of Asia Scholars Humanities Book Prize and the Bonnie and Vern L. Bullough Book Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality. Transtopia in the Sinophone Pacific (2021), a Lambda Literary Award finalist, winner of the Bullough Book Award, and recipient of the Alan Bray Memorial Book Award Honorable Mention from the Modern Language Association, enriches the geopolitical histories of transness. I also edited The Global Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer History (2019), which earned the 2020 Dartmouth Medal from the American Library Association. Grants and fellowships from Academia Sinica, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Arts & Humanities Research Council, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study, the National Humanities Center, the Tang Prize Foundation, and Wellcome Trust have funded my work.

My favorite composers are Chopin, Debussy, Satie, and Schubert.
